Located in Makhanda (Grahamstown) in the Eastern Cape, the South African Library for the Blind (SALB) provides a national library and information service to the blind and print-disabled readers in South Africa.
As part of its mandate, constitutional responsibility, and continuous service improvement to its members, the SALB is striving to expand its collection of African Language material.
Because the focus of this particular vacancy is on African Languages not inherent to the Eastern Cape an inherent requirement of the position is 1st language fluency and proficiency by the candidate of at least one of the following African Languages: Sepedi, Sesotho, Setswana, SiSwati, Tshivenda, or Xitsonga.
The ideal candidate will be an avid reader, with excellent spelling and grammar skills, coupled with the ability to deal with large volumes of text in a day to perform quality checking on Braille reading material. S/he will be detail oriented, possess exceptional leadership and supervisory skills and excellent interpersonal relational skills. S/he will have good knowledge and expertise in the development, production and quality control on the use of braille and will furthermore meet the following requirements:
Minimum Requirements:
- First language speaker of at least one of the following: Sepedi, Sesotho, Setswana, SiSwati, Tshivenda, or Xitsonga.
- Fluency in more than 1 of the above-mentioned African languages will be advantageous.
- Qualified Braillist in 2 or more South African languages of which one of the above-mentioned African languages should be included.
- 3-year Office Administration or Business Management qualification; or
- Grade 12 with 5 years Supervisory experience.
- Excellent English communication skills for business communication requirements.
- Excellent language skills with emphasis on spelling and grammar in Sepedi, Sesotho, Setswana, SiSwati, Tshivenda, and/or Xitsonga.
- Attention to detail for quality checking in relation to language and grammar.
- Computer literate at intermediate or higher level on the MS Office Suite.
- Working knowledge of other computer software will be an added advantage.
- Ability to work independently, as well is in a team in an open office environment.
- Ability to prioritise important tasks.
Overview of the post:
- Proofreading and editing of predominantly Sepedi, Sesotho, Setswana, Siswati, Tshivenda and Xitsonga Braille files.
- Maintaining quality control in relation to work prepared in the above languages and render assistance where possible in other language work.
- Administration of volunteer’s work as and when applicable or requested.
- Assist with administration and production of ad-hoc Braille requests.
- General office administration and supervisory support.
- Training and development of Braillists.
